I'm wondering if i can get a bag / case to carry my 40D (gripped) with a Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM lens attached.

It fits in my Tamrac backpack along with other lenses but quite often I want to just go out walking with this one lens and feel the backpack is a bit overkill.

I'd like a holster type thing rather than a bag but I've no idea if you can get them ????

Any ideas or suggestions welcomed.

Thanks

Phil

What about just an ordinary sling/side bag that you can put it in sideways? crumpler make them, as well as camera bags in this style too or this could be worth looking at?

I love to go walking with my 100-400mm around my neck, if its in the bag you usually miss the shot. I brought a navy blue baby harness, cut the the baby bit off messed around with the straps cut and sewed a few bits and ended up with a harness that i can clip my camera straps to, the hook on the tripod ring clips over the centre of the harness to hold the camera and lens in a rigid position. I always put the camera neck strap over my head like normal just as back up really but your neck doesn't take any weight. All the weight of the camera and lens even the 100-400mm is taken evenly over your back through the harness. Its brilliant, I do get alot of good comments and more importantly I can walk for hours with both hands free. I usually wear a couple of waist or hip bags to put other bits in. Suppose you could wear a backpack as well if you wanted. Maybe I should go on the Den with my idea!!!

Big Crumpler bags are a bit more than I wanted to spend but might look for a used one. That spider thing is a bit nifty but it's a bag I'm after.

I have been looking for the perfect bag for 20 years & don't think I will find it. Every time I think I have the right one, there's a bit more kit I need to put in it & it won't fit.

I know :gag:

Sounds pretty good - have you got a pic of it ?

Might see what the world of shooting / fishing bags has to offer.

No pictures at hand but I will try and do some tomorrow so you can see what I've done

I think one I have will take I check it in morning it was for sale some time back

Cheers.

I have this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lowepro-Slingshot-Digital-Lenses-Panasonic/dp/B000BAX50G

It does exactly what you need. The whole bag slides to where you can reach your camera, and you release a zip to get the camera out.

I have a D80 plus a 70-300 zoom that fits in OK.

That kind of thing looks good - I agree it wouldn't be deep enough for the overall length of the camera and lens though.

Check out the ThinkTank range of holsters. They do one that is a perfect fit for your combo.

I have the TT Digital Holster 50 on the TT harness and belt (along with a few other attachments) and it holds my D300 with 80-200 AF D ED and the hood mounted for shooting without any difficulty so you should be fine with the 40D and 100-400. If you are near Edinburgh at some point then Jacobs now has a good TT stock if you want to size up the options.

slingshot 300aw should have enough space for you..

wide enough for a 20D + 70-200 or a 120-300 unmounted. ive actually got the 120-300 at the bottom now, the 70-200 in the middle and the gripped 20D unmounted on the left side.

Like this ?

This seems to be wider (for grip or pro body) and the lens 70-200 they're using as an example is a similar size to my 100-400 i think.

That's the fella. I had the identical version for a non-gripped body. Perfect fit with 100-400L - which seems to be the lens illustrated, even though they don't mention it!

If you unzip and extend the base, I think you can get it in with the hood on too, ready for action, which is handy.

Very well made bag with a few neat touches. My Kenko Pro 1.4x fitted perfectly in the side pocket :)
