Well i have just spent a small fortune on my Canon EOS500D (yes i know its cheaper than lots of kit out there but to me it was a once in a lifetime purchase) and now i want to get a small sized bag for carrying the camera and a couple of lenses around.

Having spent a lot on the camera i need to do this on a tight budget (i wont get sign off from SWMBO for anything pricey)- any guidance or experience you have of suitable kit would be greatly appreciated.

Where do you start ......

First you need to decide if you want a shoulder bag or a backpack or a sling ?

Second do you want it to carry what you have now or room for expansion of your equipment

and third, do you mind if it looks like a camera bag.

Lowepro do some very nice bags and backpacks as well as the sling type. Crumpler do some bags that don't really look like Camera bags if this matters to you.

If you can, try to go to a good Camera shop and have a touchy feel with various bags, manufactorers etc and see if you have a preferance.

Oh and sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you'll never find the "perfect" bag - there will always be something a different bag has that you want etc etc :lol:
 
Agree totally with andyred. You'll need to think about the style you want, make a shortlist & and then see the bags in the flesh.

I'm a fan of Lowepro and have tried:

  • Slingshot 100 (good idea, although a little small once you start buying more & more kit)
  • Toploader TLZ1 (good for trips out if you're only taking one zoom lens - no space for other bits & bobs though)
  • Fastpack 200 (good sized bag & handy separate top section for stowing waterproof/food etc)
All of which I have then got rid of as my demands changed! :bonk:

I now have two bags for separate requirements:

  • Lowepro Primus AW for days out with the kids (bigger top section)
  • Tamrac Expedition 4 for me & my camera only!

I would suggest the Slingshot or Fastpack as a starter, however don't expect the first bag you buy to be the only bag you buy!

Oh, that's so true! :)

I've lost count of the number of camera bags I've bought. I currently use three... A Tamrac Pro 12 to keep everything in at home. A LowePro Flipside 400 when I'm not sure what I'm going to shoot or I need to pack two bodies and I have a LowePro Flipside 200 which will comfortably take the 7D+grip with my 70-200mm f2.8 on it and another lens packed in too.

There are loads of really good bags out there but I'd strongly advise you to shop around 'cos there's a wide variance in prices.

I'd have to recommend Lowepro. They're just so sturdy. I started with a Lowepro Rezo 170 AW which could carry my 450D with a lens attached, a second lens and still had space for another with memory cards, wireless trigger spare batteries etc. I still have it lying about actually, i should probably sell it on but i'm a hoarder :p

Now i have a Slingshot and it fits ALL of my gear in exept my tripod :)
 
Cheers guys - thanks for all the info - i am a complete newbie and appreciate the advice you have all given - off to google now to check out some specs and prices.
 
my first bag was the lowepro 100 slingshot and I loved it. Easily caried a 400d with kit lens attatched and had room for lots of other bits and pieces- if like me you then upgrade you may run out of space quickly.
 
I use a Lowepro Slingshot 102AW at the moment and its a great little bag, but not the most comfortable to wear due to the way it sits across the boobies area! That's probably not something you gents have to worry about though! :lol:
It is nice and small to carry around though, and I can safely fit my 350D, kit lens, 50mm and 55-250 in it without any difficulties.
