Anybody carry their DSLR with them when cycling.

Am looking for a bag to take D300s with Sigma 18-250 attached only. Something like the Crumpler Jimmy Bo 500 seems to fit the bill, any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I have been a racing cyclist for 30 years & have just taken up photography I would have a look at the smaller Lowepro rucksacks. Rucksacks are by far the best way to transport gear while riding bikes its handy to have a bit of extra space to stuff extra clothing/ gloves etc as well as the camera gear.

i have a set of panniers for my mountain bike and the bag that fits over the bag wheel has plenty of space for a a camera and lenses, and is very sturdy and protected rather than using the side panniers which could get bashed, however the brand i have has gone from my head but will pop the name on here when i remember.

cheers

You've never ridden a touring bike with panniers?

Beleave me I have! I have also been touring in the Alps with just a saddlebag saves weight!, great for a months worth of gear but overkill just 1 SLR

It depends what you're using the camera for. If you're stopping to take pics of other riders a lot you might find it easier to carry the camera on your front. You can clip it to a rucsac or use a separate strap crossed behind your back. This means it doesn't interfere with my rucsac at all so I can remove the rucsac without taking the camera off.

I use this set up for MTB and it means the camera is in my hands and ready to shoot within five seconds of getting off the bike. No messing about (very useful if you're out with a group). I use a Tamrac Adventure Zoom 5 which has four eyes sewn in for clipping the straps on. Also you don't really want panniers if you're doing technical riding too. I have an E3 with 12-60 so pretty similar weight to the D300

If it's more for touring and stopping less frequently then a rucsac or panniers would be fine.
