Ball head question

I currently have a Nikon D5000, Sigma 150-500, Manfrotto monopod and a Redsnapper 283 with pan/tilt head.

I've been thinking of getting a ball head for use on the mono/tripod.

Would the Redsnapper RSH-12 or Manfrotto 488rc be good enough to take the weight of the Sigma lens and body?

I use the RH-12 with a 40d & 150-500 & it copes fine. I've never tried the Manfrotto, so I can't compare, but the lens foot means pretty good balance so it's just the weight to consider. I believe the Redsnapper takes 10kg, you'll be hard pressed to beat it for £50.

Quite so!

No question, a gimbal beats a ballhead for large lenses, but you can get by with the cheaper option. You just need to get the friction right & accept that you can't let go completely without nipping it up.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. I know the 393 is the better version, but from what i've read, don't work too well with monopods which is what it'll spend most of it's time on. The only worry i've got with the ball heads is being able to sit in a hide once in a while with a tripod and being able to leave it sitting for a while without it failing.
 
With a good ballhead should be able to leave your lens sitting horizonatally without it flopping. My Acratech head holds my 300 f2.8 in that position easily.
