Compared to a pan and tilt the movement options seem more than limited?

HOWEVER

They seem alot smaller and easier to carry attached to a tripod ..

Any ball heads which allow for a better movement?
 
How are they limited? You have 360 degree swivel and 180 side to side and 180 back to front and everything between.

A pan and tilt is more limited than a ball head surely?
 
The movement of a ballhead should match a 3way/pan&tilt.

It is far quicker to position, however the 3way is more accurate as you can change each axis independantly.
 
My ball (cough) has a lot more range of motion than my pan and tilt head. It can have the camera pointing straight down, straight up, behind and then to both sides.
Maybe it depends on the head?
 
I think you need to rotate or twist the socket for full movement, I if understand you correctly.

Is there anything it can't do or you think a ballhead would improve upon?

Sometimes a pan and tilt may be preferable...I'm thinking in a studio for example?
 
I got a ballhead for traveling due to size and weight and really miss the P&T - the BH takes a lot of getting used to.
 
I used to have a pan and tilt but I gave it away as the arms were long and I wanted something more compact so I got a ball head.

The big down side for me is that no matter how careful I am there's always a bit of drop when I stop fiddling with it. I do wish that I'd kept the pan and tilt...

I also have a geared heard which avoids the drop problem and can be positioned accurately but it's big and heavy.

So, after trying and buying without really careful thought I'd advise anyone else to try and think of the + and - points of each type of head before buying.

Personally I think that a pan and tilt is probably worth the hassle over a ball.

I find ball heads easier to use because thats all I've ever used, except once on a borrowed tripod, and was swearing at it in 5 mins:lol:

I also lent my Benbo tripod to the guy who I borrowed off, he swears it was like wrestling with an octopus:D
