Yes
Looking to change the ball head on my tripod, what would be a decent one to carry a 5D3 with 70-200mm lens ?.

Does it have to be a ball head?

From the title i'm guessing yes.

Reminds me of many years ago when I went in the butchers and asked for two chicken breasts.
Butcher says no we don't have any, but we have pork chops.
???????????????

I was just wondering as I'm not a big fan of ball heads.

This will work for sure.

Might be handy if the OP lets us know what sort of tripod its going to sit upon?
Makes a difference. Markins would be good on a Traveler type where the legs fold back on themselves
That Gitzo would be the bees knees on a Systematic type tripod, but not so on a smaller one with centre column.

I have one of these, rock solid when locked up and would easily support the weight of the OP's gear.
Total overkill for me now I only have Olympus/Panasonic and Fuji gear.
Lives in the car with an old Manfrotto 055 Pro, might come in handy one day when out and about

Cannot recommend Novoflex enough. Makes my Arca Swiss feel cheaply built tbh

Gitzo get a lot of praise but I haven't found anything in their range I'd want or buy. Odd...

but anyway you are right, we'll need more information to suggest something more appropriate inc. budget. Markins, gitzo etc aren't exactly cheap.

I also have one as shown below
This is used on a travel type tripod, but FLM make some much bigger ball heads.
Again rock solid when locked down, made in Germany and comes with a ten year warranty

With you there on Gitzo, their newer ones are supposed to be very good though.

The Manfrotto 055 pro is a great tripod. A touch heavy but you could use it as an axle stand.

I’ve got the slightly larger FLM CB-38 FT and as you’ve said, it’s a great bit of kit, very well made and very secure when tightened. Mine is on a set of Manfrotto 055 legs.

3LT airhead with the L bracket is brilliant

I really like my Airhed Switch. It's surprisingly sturdy for a small package and super fast to use.

The Airhed 360 looks a little bigger, though I've no concerns about the switch's sturdiness anyway tbh.

Thanks everyone - some choice there. The tripod is a F&C carbon fibre one. The one supplied sags down with the weight of the camera/lens on it.

I might be persuaded to *part with my Really Right Stuff ballhead - I don't use this one anymore :

*If anyone is seriously interested in buying I would then start a new thread to sell it in TP Classifieds and they would have first dibs.

I use a lot of RRS gear and they are extremely well designed to a very high standard of manufacture. I won't have any clamp (except on a gimbal head) which isn't Arca-Swiss profile and which doesn't have a Quick Release lever because of the nature of my wildlife photography.
