I am looking to replace the ball & socket head on my Trekker with a stronger one as I find the standard one moves too much when tightened and knocks my macro shots off. Can any one offer suggestions? Is the Benbo Pro head good? Thanks.

Arca Swiss Z1, Acratech, Really Right Stuff, Markins or Kirk, any of these will do the job, cost from £250 ish.

I had a Slik trigger grip ballhead on mine and was ideal for macro, nice and sturdy and quick to set-up and only cost around £40.00 Redsnapper do one similar as do Seben so worth checking out!

As Martyn says, the brands he mentiones are all of the same quality.

Really happy with my Really Right Stuff BH-55 ballhead. Extremely well made and designed and the ball action is super smooth.

Only thing is that you can only order and get them shipped from USA, so obviously the price you pay is dependant on the £/US$ exchange rate, plus tax and handling fee. Paid around £262 incl duty and fees IIRC.

Have never looked back :)

All the others are available this side of the pond, and as Mark says they are of equal quality, and all around the same price range.

Benro are getting a reputation for very high quality at much better prices than the £300 American and European heads. They are Chinese made copies of Arca Swiss. The Benro B-2 is £125 though you can get them cheaper imported through Ebay http://photopal.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=74&products_id=42

Personally I think the Benro J-2 is even better which is only a little more expensive and has an aspherical ball - friction increases as the head is tipped off centre to counteract the increased weight. They do loads of different sizes.

Very good tripods too - Gitzo copies.

You got the Benbo for flexibility....right?

An equivalent head would be the Novoflex Magicball. It's like a B&S only upside down. In other words, the ball is attached the tripod, the socket to the camera. It has fewer movement restictions than a normal B&S. Also, you can remove the camera very quickly using a large gnurled (?) wheel, so a quick release is not necessary. I think they're great.

Available from Speedgraphic.
