Ballheads on monopods

Are ballheads on monopods a good idea or not?
I have a fixed head pod at the moment and can see some benefit from a ball head, but can also imagine issues with a ballhead and balance.
 
It's a necessity for me when panning bigger lenses at motorsports.

Can't get the smoothness without the ballhead.
 
I have a Manfrotto tilt head (model 234RC) on mine after trying a ball head. Ball head was too cumbersome, tilt head is perfect... for me :)

Yep, got a ball-head on my monopod and very happy with it- allows quick and easy tilt as well as switching to portrait while on the pod.

At the BWC meet today i'd say about half of the monopods had ball heads and half tilt heads.

The tilt head is something I hadn't thought of, but it makes sence. I have a 496 ball on my tripod so the mount would be the same too.
