Ballheads

I have an inexpensive (REALLY inexpensive!) tripod, because I can't afford anything else. The top platform has what I assume is a 1/4-inch screw (fits into the bottom of my DSLR). Will a ballhead fit onto the screw --- or do I need a tripod that is meant for a ballhead exclusively?

Welcome to TP :)

All tripods and heads have standard 1/4in or 3/8in fittings. If the ball head is 3/8in (likely) you will need a tiny thread adaptor to take it down to 1/4in. Photo dealers stock them.

Is that top platform one that allows you to adjust the dslr position?

If so don't bother with a ballhead. Inexpensive tripods are already fairly inadequate at keeping your camera steady (Generally) so putting another head on it may make it even less effective. Instead look at saving for a tripod that is designed for a separate head.

it sounds like the tripod *is* designed for a separate head... Yes, any ballhead will fit (you might need a 3 quid adaptor)

I made the mistake of buying my first tripod- dirt cheap. Ok it holds the camera but you cant touch it or it wobbles for ages, but worst of all the tilt and pan movements are so sticky due to the tight bolts and plastic bits it is horrible to use. So- I'm going to ditch it for a red snapper RS-284 and ball head to match, should make an easy christmas present for me!!!

The only good thing from buying a cheap tripod is it made me realise how handy it can be and how worth it a good one is!
