I was actually too close and using the 300mm prime - full frame width shot - hence lack of wingtips! Shame about the blade of grass over his face! Actually taken at 12:20pm - they're not just night and dusk creatures..

Great capture Andy Must have been great to be so close. I think with the bird being so big the piece of grass across the face does not really detract from the subject

Thanks for the responses. I'm wondering whether it should have a bit more contrast, but I didn't want the eye to disappear into darkness completely.
