OK, I'm intrigued!

A steel rule, inverted image? But I don't think it is a scale in inches, because there are five divisions - so tenths, but tenths were very rarely used, eighths or sixteenths.

Then, there are the two sides, with a clear offset, but presumably both have a similar origin point. So are they different scales? Perhaps a vernier? But attempts to carefully measure suggest the scales are the same.

So, I am stumped!

Bit of a shoehorn Paul,
My idea was looking forwards and backward through time as the years advance and the joy and nostalgia in looking back at the time of our 20's and 30's when the brashness of youth was fading and life was just beginning.

And the reality of it, the clue is the chipboard, its a framing square with start points for measurement on the inside and outside edges.

Interesting treatment, the traditionalist in me says that it’s all too dark and that detracts from the light on the grass. A crop down to remove the sky improves it for me by bringing up the emphasis on the grass
