Does anyone know if the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens has noticeable barrel distortion? I was going to buy this but read some reports of this distortion. I really wanted this lens but.......

Cheers

Brian

Its a very nice lens and good value. You can correct any distortion automatically in camera if you shoot jpeg. If you shoot Raw then you editing program will probably do it to with the tough of a button.

Thanks for that. How is that done?

If you shoot in jpeg in your camera menu there should be a auto disortion control. This will then correct all your nikon lenses automatically while taking the shot.

Your camera may need i firmware update if you can not find it.

The Nikon 35/1.8 is blessed with a little more than its fair share of barrel distortion, but it's really not a problem. With some DSLRs it can be corrected in-camera, or certainly in post processing software. Many programmes will sort out distortion at the click of a mouse, by looking up the lens characteristics in its data base, eg Lightroom. You can also banish vignetting and CA in the same way, purple fringing too :)

These days many lenses are designed with these kinds of software corrections in mind.

Thanks a lot

distortions are geenrally very easy to correct as programs like Lightroom has lens profile which corrects the image automatically.

if you don't have a profile for your lens...then it is very tricky if the distorsion is complex, but if it is purely uniform barrel or pinch then still quite straight forward

My D90 ,firmware version is:

A. 1.00
B. 1.00
L. 1.002

I have just downloaded the firmware update. NKLD02005.bin, formatted an SD card on the camera, this gave me a root directory of DCIM, put the SD card into a card reader and dragged the bin file into the root directory. Put the SD card into the camera, went to firmware version and there was only a 'Done' no 'Update' option. I don't quite understand what I have done wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

Brian
