Hi folks,

Just registered as I'm wanting to take my photography to the next level.

I am looking to buy a Cannon Eos 300d but I'm unsure if this is the best choice for my requirements. I'm a motorsport nut and love taking 'big sky' landscape pics.

I have settled on the Eos because my brother in law has the analogue? version and recommended the Eos due to the availability of lenses. Also because he wants to try to flog me his old lenses :) Does anyone know if a lens for a 300 would fit a 300d?

Can anyone suggest a better alternative for my requirements, there's so much choice in the £300 - £500ish price range for a noob like me to get my head around.

Any advice would be appreciated

oh yeah  everyone

Personally if your budget is £300-£500 I would look at a 450d instead of the 300d.
I picked up a 450d 2nd hand on here for £290 :)

300-500 all in,sort out a decent wide-standard(sky and general) and a decent tele (motorsport) then see how much budget you have left for the body

a good firm place to start would be an 18-55IS and 55-250IS, both are budget lenses but very good budget lenses, that might well leave you enough for a 450d or maybe a 30d which is older tech but better built

As above, the 300D, while still capable is quite an old camera now, for a bit over £500 you could probably get a 500D, which is the newest model in the consumer range.

If the lenses your brother in law have as EF or EF-S they will fit most modern canons, The only exception is EF-S lenses on full frame cameras like the 5D/1D etc, but I very much doubt if you will be looking at those cameras.

Hi and welcome.:)

Myself I don't buy what other people reccomend or because they want to sell me their old kit. What fits one doesn't always fit the other.

You need to buy the camera that fits your buget, your hands and with a control layout you find user friendly.
So go to a shop and try bodies from everyone Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax etc.

eos lens [EF] should fit across the board with the exception of EF-S which are for 1.6 crops only

Welcome to TP :)

Canon 300D was a landmark camera - the first really affordable DSLR. But the 350D that followed was better, if only because it switched on immediately without the rather annoying warm-up time. I sold a mint one recently for £175 (body only) - flippin bargain if I say so myself.

In terms of performance/value, I think the 450D is hard to beat, with the 18-55 IS (rather than the non-IS version, completely different optically) and 55-250 lenses - as David says. Really quite a potent outfit for the money, with upgrades and future options available in every direction

Have a look here for prices http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod636.html

Thanks everyone,

There are so many options to consider. I think the opinion about handling the alternative bodies before commiting is a good idea and to be honest something I'd neglected a bit.

I like the shots this chap is achieving from a Nikon d40http://stuartburnsphotography.zenfolio.com/ . I'm all for saving money rather than buying something I could not get the most from.

I wasn't aware there was a for sale section through this site, where else is a good place to 'window shop'? Checked out the camerapricebuster (thanks Hoppy) I'd be seriously hesitant about spending so much on something from a place like ebay, wrongly perhaps?

Just to add - I think I could look at body and lens combos until I'm 60 and argue for and against buying each. You've probably just got to commit to something at some point. Who'd have thought Currys cheapest for a 450d? I'm amazed. But I am a noob
