Basic image manipulation programme-help!!

My son has just got a point and shoot casio camera (7.2 M pix-not bad!) and wants a free, downloadable basic image manipulation programme, the one that comes with the camera he tells me is poor. Any help appreciated, he doesn't want to go for CS 3 and isn't at home so can't use mine.

or gimp which is more in depth?

another GIMP recomendation here, i use it for just about everything and can't really fault it apart from it being deliberatly obscure at times!

I've used Gimp, and it's powerful, but it is a bit idiosyncratic.... not really one for the casual user. Picasa is one for the casual user, but it's less capable. Take your pick.
