Basic question on sharing photos for community!!

I am feeling well out of my depth - I have been asked to find a way to store photos on-line for our community.

It needs to be

-easy to use
-easily accessible by anyone (ie an easy link to it)
-able to divide into different events
-secure so anyone can see it but only the person holding the account can change/add/delete, etc.

Can anyone suggest the best way to do this. Obviously prefer it to be free, but don't mind paying a small annual fee.

I suggested facebook, but lots of the people are quite old and only just got round to using the internet, so thats too much of a leap. But that style of storing/cataloging photos would be great!!!

Is there anything suitable out there?

Thanks.

Flickr immediately springs to mind, it's unlimited for a small fee (£20 per year or do I think). You can put images into different sets for different events and you can send them a link to your photo stream or separate individual sets.

For private events if you ever have any of those where you only want a handful of people to be allowed access to the images, you can hide and make sets private and send out guest passes so the set can only be accessed via that guest pass link.

Microsoft Skydrive.

Very easy to use, and does all you want.

I find it to be excellent.

+1 for Flickr.

But it's slightly different if you don't want non-members of the community to be able to freely see the images. Your post isn't clear on this point.

(it's doable with Flickr, but a little more involved)

Have a look at photobucket

I would say Flickr, as is mentioned above and it is also very easy to use.

Another +1 for flickr, I can't remember what are able to do with the free accounts regarding sets and collections but you are limited to seeing your latest 200 photos. For £20 a year you can upload as much as you like. Privacy can be set for sets, collections or even individual photos. They offer easy linking code in BB or html format too.

Thanks everyone, really helpful.

Looks as if I will have to investigate Flickr and fingers crossed I will get to understand it.

PS Sorry if I wasn't clear about the fact that the photos will be for everyone to see. It is for a small village in England and they hold really fun 'villagey' events ..... I need to get this sorted for the Jubillee celebrations, so feeling rather pressured, so all tips, thoughts, etc really appreciated.

Perhaps a Flickr group would suit the situation?

Those not particularly interested could be provided with a direct link to the group, those who want to get a bit more involved could join Flickr and submit their own images to the group. You can choose various degrees of moderation on a Flickr group to decide who can do what.

The basics could be set-up quicker than he kettle can boil.. if you need a hand, just shout ;)
