Yes
Specifically on these models:
Does a 1D take the same battery as a 1D mk2 ?
I am thinking of a 1D as a back-up body and don't really want to be carrying twice the amount of spare batteries around.!

Yea, MkI and MkII are the same. The MkIII battery version is different though.

On a seperate note, would you be better waiting another month or so to save the cash to buy another MkII?
The MkI is very old now and a 40D would out perform it at this stage and would probably be a better buy.

Swings and roundabouts, could do with just winning the Lottery.

Thanks for the reply.

I am sorry to hijack the thread, I wondered if there are any better quality batteries around for 1Ds mk2 and alike? The current ones including off-brand hold way too little charge even compared to 40D and also weigh a tone. It would be nice to get a new generation battery compatible with mk2.

I'm afraid not.

The NP-E3 used in the earlier 1D series is a NiMH battery, and although you may find third party ones with a slightly higher capacity they're just not that good.

The LP-E4 used in the mark III series onwards is Li-Ion, has a lot more capacity and lasts for ages. Unfortunately they're not transferable between the early and later marks.
