Battery freeze-out.

Has anyone had a similar experience using AA batteries in a grip in freezing weather, where the camera reports an error even if the batteries are OK?

The situation was that I had the D700 with eight new Duracell AA batteries in the grip, which worked for a few minutes in the cold, but the camera was not then used for about three quarters of an hour. It then reported 'Err' and locked out. The battery setup was for non-rechargeabale AA batteries.

I subsequently changed the grip battery to a lithium type (and the menu setup to match) and it worked perfectly.

The AA batteries worked later when warmed up a bit.

Is this common?

its common for batteries to not work when cold. as i understand Alkalines are the worse ten i think nimh then lithium rechargeable and lithium primaries (photolithium/ whatever ie the ones you used) are the best bet for cold weather.

people often keep one battery in their pocket and one in the camera and keep swapping htem whant in the cold. Ive not had a problem other than it (appearing to) run down much faster.
