Battery Grip 7D need some advice.

Hey, first post here.

After the sad err99 death of my 30D:'( i went and got a nice new 7D (finally gave me an excuse that the mrs couldn't say no too):love:

now i'm looking into the battery grip choices, part of me thinks, Go Cannon, its built to exactly match the 7d and will be the best. But i then look at the price.

I have seen others on amazon,

which seems way too cheap, and i'd expect it to fall apart and cause problems to the 7D

Yet this one looks a bit better, but still i've got reservations as there are no reviews to read.

So in simple terms, has anyone bought a 3rd part grip for the 7D, what do you think of it? :help:

Hi Adam, I purchased this one the other week http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120596983353&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT It fits like a glove, there is no slack on it, does what it says on the box, and a very fast delivery. Tbh all the ones advertised in place`s like http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-canon-bg-e7-battery-grip-for-eos-7d/p1033247 etc, are identical, I cannot see the difference myself other than the top plate of the grip has Canon stamped on it and made in Taiwan.
 
Have a look on ebay for MeiKe grips. I've had a couple now. One on my 40D and I have one now I use on my 5d2.

They are perfectly good. The build and feel is identical to the genuine Canon one, however the gears that tighten them onto the camera are metal unlike Canons plastic gears that have been known to strip.

only have one issue. I've got the money in Amazon vouchers so it needs to really be from there. Anyone have experience with any from there?
 
I decided to bite the bullet and just by the Canon one, don't want to risk having 2 out of action cameras!

That isn't the case for the 5Dmk2 as far as I can tell.. The magnesium body to the grip gives it a solidity which the copies don't have (or at least the one I had....).
 
You've spent 1200 quid on a 7D, why the **** do you want to skimp on a cheapo grip.

Stupidity as far as I am concerned. :shake:

You probably don't even need a grip.

I brought the one on Amazon for £29 a few weeks back as i had a £20 voucher and have had no issues at all. I found the colour and texture a perfect match for the 7d albeit plastic rather than alloy. The feel of the buttons is slightly different but considering what i paid i really can't complain..a right bargain

I agree totally,as the 5D II grip is far better in quality on the original Canon in comparison to third party versions.
Although cosmetic wise I can't say I'd say the same with the 7D grip unfortunately going by mine:shake:
But as someone has already stated,the Canon version is probably higher build quality?
 
I was going to have a go in this thread but can't be bothered.

For those that want to spend a fortune on something that won't get used go ahead.

For those like myself who have the cheaper alternative and find it perfectly good and solid in use buy an alternative.

For those who think just because you spend a fortune on a body you should spend a fortune on accesories go buy the expensive ones.

If you won't buy alternatives for anything then don't buy Tokina, Tamron, Sigma or any other lens not made by the manufacturer.

For the record I have a Canon 5D2, a Canon 17-40L, a Canon 25-105L, a Canon 100-400L, A perfectly serviceable MeiKe grip that I use 80% of the time, and two LP-E6 OEM batteries that I have no idea which of the 3 batteries I own are.

SO spending £79 on a MeiKe grip and £21 each for pattern batteries makes me STUPID :bonk:

I spend most sundays photographing american football games, around 90% of those photos are portrait, i'd prefer a more comfortable way for shooting.

To the budget advisers, yes i'm used to using 3rd party things, had a weird make remote release for my 30D which did work very well, the times it worked.

If i could go to jessops or calumet or RGB photo and get to feel and play with the other 3rd party grips then yes i could easily be presuaded to go that route, but the fact that all i can base myself off is some people experiences (some good, some bad) i'd prefer to go for something i can literally get my hands on first.

Why did you buy L glass? i'm sure a sigma £30 lens will preform just the same, be just as reliable and suitable to the same amount of weatherproofing. [/sarcasm off]

I went for L glass purely because of the build quality. Over the last few years I've had Tamron and Sigma lenses. One of my favourites was a Tamron 18-250 which travelled all over Europe with me and was a bang on lens. I actually wish I'd tried a Sigma 150-500 ( is that the range can't remember ) before buying the 100-400L but I have no recollection of it being out 2 1/2 years ago.

One of the main reasons was compatibility, I know some of the old Sigmas won't work on the latest bodies and Sigma won't rechip them. I suppose there are old Canon ones the same.

It's very much horses for courses, however I wouldn't slag anyone off for any purchase as long as they are happy with the results.

I would say though that all my L glass doesn't suffer any of the aberations my Sigma or Tamron lenses did.

So anyone got a canon 600L going for about a fiver :D

Glad this forum will allow people to stand their ground back and get a friendly response.

Only reason i'm going for the canon grip over any 3rd party is for the sheer fact, i've held one in a shop and can't hold the others so don't want to spend money on something i might regret then have to fork out more to buy what i could have done originally.

Have to apologise to Adam for the above post which on reflection was needlessly rude and aggressive.

My only excuse is that judging by the time I posted the message I was probably PUI (posting under the influence). :beer:

On the other hand, Amazon is such a farce!

I ordered the canon grip from them on friday and paid express delivery so i'd have it at 1pm saturday.

I never recieved it, phoned them and they have refunded the postage.

Yet today i still have not recieved it, so phoned them again (50minutes on the phone) and they said they'd compensate me £25 onto my card. Which they then sent an email saying i'd get half on card and half in gift certificates. obviously a nice wee trick to make sure i have to spend more money with them.

Thats it finally recieved,

feels and looks perfect, now just need to shake this chest infection and go out and play!
