In a recent moment of weakness (I seem to suffer from them when looking at cameras and lenses) I bought a 5DmkII and now want to get a grip for it. I was looking at the Canon but it is a bit expensive compared to the 3rd party versions. With my 40D I have used both a 3rd party and an offical Canon grip and not noticed any difference. I have however heard that there are issues with the 3rd party grips on the 7D and wondered if they work ok on the 5D mkII? Has anyone tried one?

I believe the 5D2 has the same batteries as the 7D, so they will be chipped and therefore official is the only way to go at the moment :(

I use a Meike Grip from fleabay on my 5D2 (used a Meike grip on my 50D also) great bit of kit for the price.

I got one including mains carcharger from fleabay for approx £9 inc delivery - no battery display, but when used in the grip you get a display from the original canon battery.

There are third party grips available for the 5d2 which work absolutely fine with the official Canon batteries (i.e. the show the full battery information etc)

If you are interested, I have one I no longer use (I came to the conclusion I preferred the weighting of the camera without the grip with the lenses I use). I've previously offered it on this thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=203076

that could well be of interest, I have started a thread in the wanted section if you could reply on there as I think the rules say that all trading neds to happen in that section.

i use a third party grip on mine with offical batteries no hastle at all

I have a 3rd party grip (5D2) works really well - don't see the point in splashing out on a canon version
