I'm looking to get a grip for my 500d, the genuine canon one is about £100 but I've seen compatibles for about half the price or less. Has anyone ever tried a compatible or do people generally advise to stick to genuine?

the nikon compat from linkdelight is every bit as good as the real thing.......

Compatible.......got mine off Amazon at Xmas & it's been faultless, batteries are as good as the Canon originals.

I've got a compatible one for my 7D and it's been perfect, no problems with it at all.

I got a 'linkdelight' one, it felt more expensive and better built than the 450D it was attached to! :D

Picked it up secondhand for £30 with another battery too, absolute bargain!

I have a compatible one that I used on my 450d, to be fair it did a cracking job and I wouldn't hesitate buying another.

As my 450d is now sold I ought to get shut of it!

Cheers

Rob

The LinkDelight grip has been on my T2i(550D) for about 3 weeks now and is a great addition to a camera that is a little small for my hands and lightweight. It was $58.99USD + $15.00 airmail shipping. 2 batteries and a wired remote control cable/switch were also included.

If you know anyone local to you try and see how much of it works or doesn't work.
I have a opteka grip on a 450D and a genuine canon on my 500D the genuine one is full functionality no problems. The opteka one I need to switch it off before I can use some of the buttons and dials like the jog near the shutter release and ISO button. It's not to bad switching it on but you only remember you need to switch it off when you go back to landscape and try to take a photo and you miss the shot.

Another vote for Linkdelight. Their battery grips are superb and look exactly like the Canon version.
