Hi there i am finding my 400d front heavy and hard to handle with the 70-300mm lens on the front.

My question is does anybody else on here have this camera with the battery grip fitted if so does it make it better to hold as i find it diggs into the palm of my hand when the lens is fitted?

Cheers

Used to own the 400D with grip. Definately improves the balance of the camera and means when shooting upright, that you have an extra shutter button and double battery life.

Some like them, there's one on this site who hates them, I'm sure he'll post here when on next ;) but I love them and have one on both my 40D and 5D Mark II as they help me massively with handling :)

Yeah that was my other hope in getting the battery grip as my hands are as steady as a rattlesnakes tale.lol.

I just bought a tripod for this reason, i dont need help in the blurring your shots department thats for sure.

I've just ordered one for my 450D for exactly that problem, I'll let you know how I get on with it when it arrives :)

Cheers that would be great.

Can i ask did you get the one with the
rechargeable battery built in or did you go for the Canon part.

i put a battery grip on my 400d.

I think it balances better with my 24-70, and my 70-200L. There isn't that much weight in a battery grip, but it does balance the camera more, and the size of the camera increases, so its not as hard to hold.

I found that i do a lot of portrait images, and it's much easier now. I got a Canon one off an Ebay seller (Clearance bargains i think) for £50 delivered.

*snip* There isn't that much weight in a battery grip.

A BG-E2 + one battery adds another 415g to the camera (on my 50D), you notice it after it's been hanging from your neck/shoulder all day

Aye, but the 50D is a LOT heavier than the 400D.

I have a battery grip on my 400D and it made all the difference, made it a much easier camera to use. I don't have one on my 50D - but the jury is still out on whether I'll put one on there.

I've just gone for one with the non-canon batteries after advice on here that there is not much difference except the canon name and a much higher price tag :)

I had a grip on my 400D, it made a huge difference to the feel and balance, it is a must have.

The 40D I have now feels much more solid, so am not sure whether to go for a grip for that or not.

i have just got a photix battery grip and 2 spare batteries for my 450d from hong king....about £45 if i recall correctly.
camera is now well balanced and the portrait controls neat. The quality is superb and i have used it for 3 days now and no problems at all (fingers crossed)

most people will tell you that after they added the battery grip to the 400D they never took it off.
I totally agree with that, I have the 70-300mm IS lens and the camera just feels so wrong without the grip on. ( i did take it off to clean the camera at xmas). Personally it makes the whole camera look more chunky and it feels safer.

Another vote for the grip... intended to only use it when out with the camera all day, but as rgrebby said... it's never come off and not likely to either.

I stuck a Phottix grip under my 350d and like the feel and balance much better than without.

Ok cheers for all the help battery grip it is for me.

Next question what make do you's use i see the Phottix mentioned i was looking at this one on ebay or should i go for the canon one.

I like the idea of being able to charge the grip itself though.

Dont get a Hahnel HC-400D Battery Grip

I am very disappointed with this battery grip, it is not like the canon and other 3rd party grips my friends have, it does not have the any of the operational buttons on, and does not allow for vertical shutter release, aperture and shutter speed or ISO adjustments, when held in portrait mode, as the others do, this is really why I wanted this attachment to my camera for ease of use in portrait mode, and also is a different shape eg the hand grip is not as pronounced, so really it is just a glorified expensive battery holder,

Dont waste your money, as I have, get a canon or other 3rd party one

Strange the ones for the 30d and the 450d have both the vertical shot button and ajustment buttons, is yours an old model?? Wayne

No Mate my son got it from warehouse express at Christmas for me, yeh I noticed the other have the buttons but these dont Clicky Link abd the 7 day period had past to send the thing back and to boot they sent me 2, which I m sending the 2nd back as it was a duplicate

I've had a go on a 400d (which I have) with a battery grip and I'd say that it definitely improves the balance. In fact, I'm thinking of getting one myself...

Yes the battery grip does help the ballance, and with the smaller models like the 450d it also helps to hold it if you have big hands, although I'd have to say my main reason for buying one was the vertical shot button, I'd be lost without it now I have got used to it.

I'm really courious why the Hannel ones for the 400D don't have the same layout as their others, my dealer didn't have one in stock for the 400d, but the ones for every other camera he did have all had them (30D, 40D, 450d, D300, D200, S5pro) maybe the camera doesn't support them for some reason?
Looks like your going to have to get a Canon one, and being totally honest they are better made. Wayne

Me to I was gutted Hahnel Website

Some will say get the Canon grip, all i can say is that the Phottix one i have works well, has a nice grippy finish and an alround good solid feel to it.
All this for under 50 quid.

Makes you look as if you know what your doing as well.

I've had a Canon BG-E3 battery grip on my 400D almost from the start. I haven't got plates of meat hands but it makes a better balance IMHO but when I see my wife holding it, she says it is a bit big for her.

In fact there's a manfrotto quick release plate permanently fitted too.

I went for the Canon "loose battery" type really because it was the first type I came across. It will take AA type batteries or the Canon moulded type - which I use, carrying a spare set in the bag just in case. I imagine with the rechargeable pack type battery grip you actually need to buy two - one fitted and one in the bag? How much would that cost?

The extra controls for portrait format are great though moving focussing point almost becomes a two handed op because of the distance to the circular "cursor" control by the LCD.

Another vote for the Canon grip
Makes the balance feel much better.
Bought two extra batteries from 7day shop at silly price:clap:

wwwwwwwwwwwww

Whoops :bonk::bonk::bonk:

Ok i ordered a grip today so i'll let you's all no how it goes but sounds like it will help 100%.
