This may sound like a daft question, but do grips come with the actual batteries, or do you have to purchase these separately? I'm looking to get one for a D90, on Amazon they're £140 and I would like to assume this comes with the extra two batteries.

Grips usually come without the batteries, some aftermarket ones (Phottix) will come with batteries.

Really? So all in all it's going to be a couple of hundred with batteries, think I'd rather go without if that's the case.

The genuine Nikon grips usually come minus any other battery, but you use your original. If it is the same grip as the D300 it only takes the one.

Nikon grips do not come with a spare battery. Even with having to get another battery I would get one. All my cameras are gripped and I would not have it anyother way, for me once I used a gripped camera there was no turning back. I would look at a 3rd party battery, I have a hanelle (sp) one and it is no different to my nikon ones and was half the price.

D90 grip fits differently, you remove battery from camera body, remove battery compartment flap and store on grip, fit grip place original battery in grip along with second battery.

Just so OP'er is aware you can use the grip with just 1 battery in it, also comes with a tray so that you can use 8 AA batteries instead of the camera batteries.
