Hi, looking at buying spares, or extras, as I am just getting my bag together, got most things I need at present, plus spare memory cards, but looking now at spare batteries, not ready for a grip yet, but I find a large price difference in Canon, around £40.00 and some compatible ones under a £10.00, must be some difference but is it worth paying the extra £30.00 each as that could go to wards another purchase.:thinking:

As long as you buy the aftermarket ones from a decent source then you'll be fine. I've just bought a couple for my G10 from HK Supplies/Phottix and they're spot-on

You gotta be careful with non OE batteries. I got a couple of nondescript ones with a grip for my Canon 350. They were utter rubbish and the two of them wouldn't even last as long as the single, original one.
On the other hand, I have two for my 40D that I cant for the life of me remember where I got em from, might have been 7dayshop? (Come to think of it, they probably came from Hong Kong via Ebay) But they are excellent and seem to last as long as the original BP511 battery. They are 2000mah.
I guess it is pot luck whether you get a good un or not.

I'd personally go for Hahnels if you're looking to save some money.

They have a 2 year warranty and last a little longer between charges than official Canon.

Definately recommend them, if they do 450D versions :)

A vote for Phottix from me, I've got 2 spares for my 450D and they're fine! :D

My spare battery came from 7DayShop and has been fine, I can't tell any difference over nearly a year of use. I think it was £6.99 v £55.00 for genuine Canon (BP-511A for 40D).

I also bought spare battery from 7 day shop (allow 7 days for delivery) for my 450 cost £5 and is fine no problems what so ever

I use mostly compatibles ( 6 or 7) not counted recently.
The only battery that has failed so far was a genuine Canon one.... though another Canon one seems to be on the way out.

Canon do not make their own batteries, so some of the look alikes are bound to be identical to them.

These are highly recommended by our American cousins on POTN (Photography On The Net). I paid £26 ish delivered for two, whilst that may not be the cheapest for third party batteries, they state the mah is greater than Canon originals. (I'm at work as I write this so I can't give actual numbers). Check their website here: -

I ordered direct, from Sterlingteks US website, for 2 batteries for my new 50D. Ordered Sat 20th Dec, delivered Fri 2nd Jan, so don't let the fact that there is no Europe/UK supplier put you off, bearing in mind there was the Christmas break in between, I thought that was pretty good.
