Hi Guys, going to the beach tomorrrow to try and create the smooth sea look

like this http://lloydsmithstudios.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/beach3-copy.jpg

i tried something similar on a waterfall today but it looked overexposed. what are the basics that i should be looking to cover when trying to re-create this look?

thanks for any help

camera on tripod and long exposure (I really like 30 secs) for this low light or ND (neutral density ie no colour just a darkening effect) filters work

manual exposure and metering with nd filters as its bloody annoying to muff a 30sec exposure cos the camera is confused

that shot looks like dawn too

Is it best to use something like f22 when taking long exposures?

i have no nd filters so might need to resort to photoshop

The way to get the effect you are looking for is to have an exposure as long as you can get away with in the prevailing light conditions, without overexposing.

To achieve the longest exposure possible, you need to select the lowest ISO your camera is capable of, together with the smallest aperture (highest f number) that your lens is capable of. If you can shoot near dawn or dusk when light levels are falling, this will also help.

If this still doesn't give you a long enough exposure time, then you will have to resort to a neutral density (ND) filter.
