Becoming an Album Design?

I am new to the forum and would firstly like to say Hi:wave: to everyone.

I am not a photographer but I am hoping that some of you may be able to help me.

Having studied spacial, 3D and graphic design over a number of years, I stumbled across album design when I designed my own wedding album last year. I have recenlty left my mundane job with hopes of working as a freelance album designer, and I am in the middle of pulling together a business plan. I am hoping to work with local photographers and for the Bride and groom who opted for a cd only package. I will be creating bespoke designs using adobe photoshop and Indesign for flush mount and lay-flat albums.

Is album design something that you (the photographer) would generally do yourself or do some of you outsource to designers? and am I right in thinking that these types of albums are becoming a popular choice?

Any advice you could give me would be fantastic.

Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum

Sorry I have no knowledge of the wedding market so can't help with your question. Best of luck though.

Hi Joanne

Wedding couples who purchase a CD will often do so because they are on a tight budget, and prefer to create their own albums on Photobox / Bobs Books or just to put prints in an album. For couples who do want an album I will always do the design myself. It leaves with me control over the product which is presented to the client (thereby my reputation) and also it means more revenue for my business.

You may find some of the bigger studios will be interested in out-sourcing this sort of work, but I'm not really sure what the demand is.

Good luck with your new venture.
