Been offered a free Lens, any advantages over my current glass

Hi all,

My Dad has a spare Lens and has offered me it to add to the collection, and I was wondering if I should take him up on his kind offer. I currently have the Canon kit lens 18-55 & 55-250 II lens, the spare one that my Dad has is the Tamron AF55-200mm F4-56LD Macro, is it worth adding this lens to my camera bag, or would it give less results than the 55-250 ?.

Well it has macro functionality, which you are currently lacking with your other lenses. Other than that, it may not add much, but a free lens is a free lens ;)
 
Am I missing something?
Can you not try it and compare them yourself?
Not like you are buying it to do so.
 
I had it on my sony a37 and it's an awesome lens. Was really sharp and put the background oof lovely. No idea how it compares to yout canon but can't be any harm in trying out for a few days.

Yup.

I remember when this lens came out and got rave reviews. It is by many accounts a very good lens and at a very reasonable price.
 
Thanks for the replies everyone, I know that the 55-250 can get close up but wasn't sure of the ratio. He also has an Canon 100mm f2.8 macro, which has never been used, but don't think he will let me have that lol

If he's never used it maybe you could swap with him for something he'd like... so the question is what would tempt him to part with the unused lens????

Nothing of what I have got sadly, but if he gets on better with my 55-250 than his 70-300 IS, then I may ask him if he wants to swap them, as I take more photos than he does now.
 
I'd try it out, take it somewhere and try it back to back with your Canon 55-250IS lens. See if you like it, the results etc...

The canon 55-250IS is a belter of a lens, I doubt the differences will be huge if any - I haven't used the Tamron, but daughter has the 55-250IS and I recommend it regularly. :)
 
I must admit that I do love the 55-250 as it is a great lens, I will be going after the 70-300 in the near future as I found that the little extra reach on both ends, worked better for captive animals.

Hi John

I had the Canon 70-300IS lens and was very pleased with it and would certainly recommend one, there are other 70-300 lenses about, which get a good following as well - would be worth investigating all options when you get to that point...

It is a lovely lens, I have had a look at others in the same range and even tho the Tamron is slightly cheaper at about £170 used, where as the Canon is over £220 used, the Tamron seems to have a better write up.

Is it a conditional offer or something? I mean to me free means free, and if it is free why even question whether to get it free?

You can always sell it and buy your dad a beer and a cigar :)

No not at all, I like to keep all of my equipment in one place, especially when it is something like lens that should be treated right & not left in a box on the shelf. I honestly wasn't sure if the macro function would differ to that of the capabilities of the 55-250. My Dad don't smoke or drink, so is a true freebie. :)
