I look at my local Craig's list on used lenses and it doesn't seem like much of a bargain at all. Example, a lens that cost 1100 new are for sell used for 940. Is this normal? Its like you can't really save much buying used. Well not enough for me to go through the trouble of dealing with who knows and possibly a damaged product. My question is do lenses hold their value that much or am I just looking in the wrong spot.

Some lenses hold their value better than others. As a Canon user I would say that Canon's own lenses generally hold their value well, with the L series lenses performing best. It's often the case that the good lenses are kept by the original purchaser and as a result there are few available second hand.

That makes sense. A good product in short supply always brings top money. I guess I need to save my money and study the art of photography a lot more so that I can make a really good choice on what my next lens will be. The L
lenses look so awesome. I did go out and buy a nifty 50 because of the price and to see how different lenses acted. I ended up using my 18-55 (kit lens) more but I think it was because of the situation I was in.
