I am looking to purchase my first DSLR and would like some advice. I am not sure what fields I will be focusing on so a fairly "open" would be useful.

I have a fairly pitiful budget, unfortunately, of approx £150-200, so I am fully aware I am looking at used gear.

It seems that this should be able to net me one of the following:
D70(s) and kit lens on ebay if I wait for the right one
a used D40 body and new lens (see here, though a bit cheeky to steal it off the OP)
A 350D on eBay, maybe a 400D if I am a bit lucky.

Is there anything else I should be considering?

Ideally I'd prefer not to go with the D40 due to lack of the AF motor, and the D70/350D is getting rather old now but both seem to be perfectly capable units.

Personally, if I were in your position, I would hands down go for a D50 and 18-55. If possible, see if you can get a Nikon 18-70 instead, as this really is a cracking lens for the money.

The D50 has a built in AF motor, so can be used with any AF lens Nikon make. It also has the same resolution sensor as the D70(s), but a newer sensor. As such you will find a *slightly* better ISO performance with the D50. It also has a slightly bigger build than the D40, and so retains the top LCD.

I can't comment on the canon route, having gone Nikon myself. That said, I can't recommend the D50 highly enough. Excellent camera.

Picked up a used D50 with 4700ish shutter actuations on it. Went out with i today for the 1st time. Did okay, managed to muck up the AF settings so was having to do a fair bit manually but a read of the manual/a google has it sorted.
