I've started reading into the 'strobe' world, and started to wonder if I should try some external flash techniques, etc - as I quite appreciate what I see with some portraits, etc.

So, I don't want to spend a mint, but want something I can learn with, that has adjustable head, etc and will work OK with a 20D. Up to £100 I guess, 2nd hand.

A mate has a 380EX that he's gonna lend me to have a play with, but I gather they are a little basic?

Also heard good things about the Sigma EF-500 Super?

Any others worth a look?

Sigma EF-500 DG Super

I couldnt afford the canon flash I wanted at the time but this has been brilliant. Has all functions the Canon has

I'm away to buy my 2nd one so I can use then as slaves for outside.

Round about £100 on dare I say it "ebay"

That's a good deal!

Cost me more than that to get mine from the US and then I got hit with the good old "Import duty" on top. Ouch!

The Vivitar 285's are great, especially for outdoor portraits because they are actually very powerful for their size. So you can site them out of picture and they have the range to still light effectively. Two arriving via UPS this very morning :)

Sunpak PZ40X at around £100 and very powerful for it's size.I use it with my canon 20D
