I just wondered if anyone could share what they thought the main benefits of having a hot shoe flash were. I currently have a d5000 and was thinking about getting an sb400 flash but at just over £100 it's a lot if money for me to spend. Would I notice a big difference?

The benefits are so many that it's almost a no brainer. you'll be able to shoot much better quality pictures at lower iso in so many more circumstances, you'll have more creative control of your light, you'll be able to put in off camera with a ttl cord and REALLY have some fun. Once you start lighting you'll never look back.
