Ok so last night i brought a JUPITER 11A 135MM F4 PRIME from a chap around the corner from me, Proper mint condition with all caps metal hood and case, glass is pristine, any hows i gave it a quick test against my canon 17-55 2.8 IS last nite and from the pics i took last nite it seemed alot sharper and colour was excellent too, im going to have another go later and will post results, will also post pics of lens to...

its great i love it, going to start seaching for more quality m42 thread fit lens, anyone know any hidden cheap gems......;)

From what I have heard, the early Takumar (Pentax) ones seem to be popular.

You could be lucky and find really cheap on t'internet and whilst these old lenses go for a lot less than "moderns", a bargain on ebay is going to prove elusive.

Best bet is to trawl neighbours, car boots, charity shops etc.
 
I have just done a quick search, and one of the "sleepers" in the M42 department seems to be the Rikenon lenses (50mm and 135mm).
 
I have been looking around for cheap old lenses too and the local Cash Converter has plenty to choose from, with prices ranging from anything between £8 to £400. Am I right in thinking that I can use virtually any old lens ie; m42, FD etc. on my 550d, obviously by using the right adapter, without damaging the camera? I assume that you would have to rely on manual settings for focussing etc.? Apologies if this sounds dumb.

I think you have it about right there Jimi, you certainly have more choice with a Canon using the adaptors.
I may take your hint and look in the local CC for lenses.

Hi andy, I've advertised a helios 44/2 in the classified here along with a Canon af confirm adaptor. The lens is 50mm f2 and very Sharp.
