best aperture for general shooting?

I think it depends very much on your style of shooting & style of images. You won't find anything on my Flickr nowhere near f/8 unless it's a land/seascape. I'd imagine 90% of my shots are around f/2-2.5 :)
 
We can give you all kinds of suggestions but I really don't think we are being much help to you that way. I suggest that you spend a little time studying depth of field. When you are studying it you will have question so come back here for help. Here is a good site I found that has a ton of good info in it.

It's really not that hard and you can always take test shots to double check yourself before starting a shoot. Pretty soon you will be able to look at the distance between you and your subject, look at the distance between them and the background and know with in a stop or two where you need to be in order to create the depth of field you desire.

If you want to be prepared for anything on general walkabout - like sun, shade, interiors etc - then P is a very underrated mode. Using program-shift, you can also set any combination of shutter speed and aperture you like, without having to switch to another mode.

I was thinking the same thing. The poor op is probably sitting back going,,, Huh!:thinking:
 
Personally, I would have thought f2.8 would be too shallow for DOF. Obviously depending on what you're shooting.
 
Most of mine are at about f2.8-f3.5. I like the subject isolation you get with a small DOF.
