hey I'm looking to get into some wildlife photography from deer to small birds etc and i'm looking for the best telephoto lens for my budget any advice? any brand that'l work with my camera will do.

Camera-Nikon d3100

budget-£500 at most really thats prob peanuts for this type of lens can it be done i dont know that much? :$

MPB have some sigma 120-400 for less than £500 or 150-500 for a little over £500 , both great lens's for wildlife !

I use the Sigma 120-400 and would suggest you go for the 150-500 ;)

I have a feeling that the Sigma 170-500 that Chris has mentioned is a screw driven AF one so won't AF on a D3100. The later 150-500 OS is an HSM lens (AF motor in lens) though but is likely to be a bit over budget. Nikkor 70-300 VR lenses seem to be well under £500 these days.

I'm not sure thats right - the canon 170-500 has a motor , so i don't see why sigma'd take it out of the nikon - the main difference was that the 170-500 motor wasnt HSM so it was slower and noiser which was why it was aka the coffee grinder( I had a 170-500 until recently when i replaced it with the 150-500 and sold the 170 to someone here for £100)

that said I'd not knock the 170-500 if you can get one cheap (and they are mostly 100-200 notes) its a good budget way in - this is also true of the 135-400 (but do check the AF thing first)

also a 150-500 is about £750 new - so you might find a second hand one nearly in budget anyway

There is/was a nikon mount 150-500 for £550 in the classifieds a week or so ago and it was mint. Not sure if it sold.

If you're looking for a 70-300 then the Tamron SP VC version is awesome and about £200-220!!

If your going down the wildlife rout buy the longest you can,its a zoom you can always knock it back a bit.
