Hi all,
A close friend of mine is going back to helmand province for several months of the year working in personal security etc and wanted to know what would be the best bcamera as he would like to take some nice pictures during his r and r time out there.

He wanted to get an slr until i told him the prices, and tbh, im not sure an slr is needed... I was wondering what the best camera would be?
I would assume he wouldnt want anything too bulky, and a decent focal range. Price is also a factor as i think around £400 would probably be the range, if not possibly cheaper as he was looking at a second hand d80 (plus cost of lens)

Any advice welcome as always :)

If not an slr then maybe a high end compact?
I know the canon s90 was rated a while ago but not sure what the best options are now.

It depends what he wants to achieve. A DSLR is obviously the best option, but will involve an outlay on lenses he may not want to make.

Check out bridge cameras like the Canon SX30

This camera has an amazing 35X optical zoom and image quality looks good as long as the ISO isn't too high. What he has to be wary of though is that sand out there which has the consistency of fine talcum powder and gets everywhere, often spelling trouble even for high end kit.

thanks for the replies.
That bridge camera looks really good.

He just wants to take nice pictures.
Hes going to be out there for quite a while and last time he did a tour he visited a lot of places he would like to have taken photographs of.
Im not sure that flash will be needed as i doubt he will be taking pics at night as its a very high risk area he will be in.

They were selling that SX30 on QVC at a knock down price a couple of nights ago. Actually all QVC were doing was taking off the cash back discount so you don't have to be arsed with applying and waiting for it.

Check oiut QVC - might still be available, although you still might get a better deal elsewhere. They had a guy in the studio demonstrating the camera and I have to say I was pretty impressed with it.

yeah there are quite a few places doing it for £299 after the cashback which seems good.
Ive told him about the camera, and also the cheaper option of the sx20 which looks good for a tight budget as well.

I wish i had the extra cash as that looks like a great holiday walk around camera!

If looking for a Bridge, this comparison is well worth a read...

I just picked up a new Lumix FZ35/38 from Digigood on Ebay for a bargain £169.99. It's now down to £165.99!
