Best canon walkabout Prime lens for a crop?

Hi, whats the best walkabout prime lens for street photography, landscape and indoor shooting groups of people?

Golly, focal length and price will help...

I went for 20mm f1.8, 30mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.4 and Sigma got my money in each case as they're arguably the best at each focal length and price point but if you want to spend a little more Canon's 24 and 35mm L lenses have their fans.

As above, there are a lot of answers to that question, and it depends on crop/full frame, shooting style, and space available.

If on crop, I'd say something around the 30mm mark, either the sigma 30mm f1.4 if you're on a budget or the 24mm / 35mm L lenses if money is less of an issue.

On full-frame, I guess the 50mm f/1.2 will take some beating, or the 1.4 or the 1.8 depending on funds.

Those should cover the 'walkabout' bit, shooting groups of people though might require something wider depending on how many people are in the group, how they're arranged, and how much space you have to work with.

For street stuff, I'd prefer something longer personally, probably the 85mm f/1.8 on crop and 135mm L on full-frame.

Lots of possibilities, take your pick!

budget i would say is around 1k but open to cheaper solutions providing the IQ and AF is as good as the L canon ones.

im not too fussed about the build quality as per say but iq and especially AF must be spot on.

i do currently have a 50mm f1.8 prime but i dont like it because the focus ring is too small and the AF is terrible

Depends on what you want to shoot...

On a crop then 20mm is ok for the wider aspect or 50mm for getting tighter. 85mm for longer range, both canon & sigma have their own options and as said, if your budget is £1k then try and get L glass as this is far superior to anything else. (Excluding Nikon).

All are around the £1k+ mark but so so worth it.

The cheaper primes from Sigma and Canon mean more lenses for your money so the choice is really down to you.

What camera do you have? I ask as when it comes to buying glass I try to get the best so whichever camera it goes on, I get some lovely photographs.

But hey... Whichever you get I'm sure you will love it/them. :0)

I used a 24l.
It's my widest lens which has it's limitations but as a walkaround I love it.

I would say 24mmL or 35mmL, it really boils down to which focal length you prefer. Personally I prefer the FoV of a slightly longer walkabout lens (50mm on FF) which would be about the same as 35mm on a 1.6x crop.
