Hi everyone.

Im quite new to photography and don't know an awful lot about cameras yet. Basically I want to buy a new digital compact camera until I'm in the position to be able to buy a DSLR. Does anyone know of a decent compact that I'll be able to take some nice landscapes with?

Hello :)

Well... any compact is capable of taking good landscapes, many of which are actually taken with telephoto (to isolate the area of interest and give an interesting viewing angle) as opposed to wide angle.

That said, you will at some point want wide angle and from my recent looks in this area the Panasonic TZ8 which is a great compact and goes to 25mm which is as wide as any point and shoot I've come across...

budget?

Landscapes is an area in which relatively speaking compacts excell. Their two major weaknesses, speed and high iso performance are often not an issue in this area, so go for it.
I like the Panny tz range too, and their nice and compact. Perhaps for ultimate IQ and still on a reasonable budget, a used Canon G9 or G10?

Check out Sony's Sweep Panorama feature. It works amazingly well! Brilliant feature for landscapes.

Panasonics usually have the widest wide-angle zooms.

I've a Panasonic TZ-6 - older, slightly less fancy version of the TZ-8 which is a really nice all round shirt-pocketable camera for longer days in the hills where you don't want to be dragging a couple of Kilo's of lenses and a DSLR body, along with the usual walking kit. I recently picked up a Canon G11 which in a lot of ways is just as good as taking a budget DSLR and the kit lens along. It's only downside is the slightly kludge-ey way of using filters with a bayonet-on adaptor tube for 58mm filters. At least this does mean I can use a polariser or ND filters, it's just a bit Heath-Robinson.
