Best compact for low light/indoors, under £250?

Hi all,

I need to replace my Nikon S8000 which I hav had varying issues with since day one (I would never buy a Nikon compact again!) and am looking for something that can fast focus and handle indoors and low light shots well, i.e. parties, kids jumping about etc, really the times where the D90 is not practical/suitable.

Want to spend ITRO £250.
The Canon S95 seems a good option...?

Can someone please recommend a compact in this range that is good in low light please? OR am I asking for too much at this price?

I went for the lx5 but the s95 was very comparable.
nothing will keep up with your dslr though
for a fast integral lens then you won't get much zoom out of it, the lx5 has very limited zoom but can manage f/2 I think.
 
Thanks; not too bothered about zoom on it as it's mainly for indoor and garden parties, that sort of stuff. :)
Will review the LX5.
 
Have a look at the olympus xz-1, goes down to f1.8 and is in the money range you're looking at. Flexible hotshoe lets you add a viewfinder or additional flash but that takes you over your budget.
 
How about a compact system camera? You will be able to pick one up in that price range
 
LX5 has options for viewfinders, rarely would you need them
also I put a petal automatic lens cap on mine and it makes the camera look very swish.
also options for an externally moutned flash should you wish. but the flash and metering are pretty good I think

Samsung EX1 can be had for about £200 now. I use it a lot and its never let me down yet. It has a really sharp Shneider Kreuznach f1.8 lens and dual stabilisation, excellent for indoor/low light use.

My local shop has a preowned Canon Powershot G9 for £179 - would I be disappointed?
