Best flash fo Nikon D3100

Depends what you are looking for if you are happy enough with manual the Yongnuo 460's are well regarded. If you need TTL Nikon SB-600's can be got used for really cheap money or if you would rather buy new the Yongnuo 565ex and the 568ex can be got for around £100-£130. The Nikon SB-700 flash is also great but a bit more expensive.
 
I have a yongnuo 465 which is a ttl flash unlike the 460. Its great flash for £50.
 
I have the Yongnuo YN-467 ETTL which I can recommend highly - also around the £50 mark.
 
I can't recommend SB-400. It is small, but that's about it. True it is just slightly better than integrated flash if your ceiling is not too high and you shoot vertically but in most cases it limits you in what you can shoot.

Get at least SB-600. It is much better (high-speed sync, can zoom, can bounce in all directions, wireless operation, much higher power, etc.)

If on budget get 3rd party flash. Any Nission or Yonhnuo TTL flash is way better than SB-400.
