Best Focal Lengths for Groups of Parties.

What do you guys thinik are the best focal ranges (on a crop body) for parties (wedding/40th)? They will be in different venues but all fairy decent sized rooms (ie not a lounge) I was pretty convinced on a 17-50mm but I just don't know now. I keep talking myself out of it :lol: I only want the one lens really, don't want to be carrying extra gear with me. :thumbs:

I always found a 35mm 1.8 great for this. For big groups you need a bit of space but nothing more than your average room would offer.
 
Yeah, sorry my title is wrong, I won't really be after group shots really, more candid stuff. I can't edit my title on my phone.
 
50mm f/1.8G might do the trick if you want to get candid, or possibly an 85mm f/1.8 depending on the size of venue (although the new 'G' lens seems impossible to find at the moment but there is an older slightly less expensive Nikkor about, think it is the 'D'). the 50mm is great value though and rarely leaves my camera now, even my 35mm is getting less use than it probably should..
 
Yeah, I already have the 35mm, I am tempted by the 50mm but I like the thought of having a range of focal lengths, hence the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8, it has os so that should give me a stop or two I think. I just can't make up my mind if its long enough though :shrug:
 
24-70 in my mind....can't see you needing anything wider really and the extra length definitely useful for candids.
 
Yeah, that's the sort of length I'm thinking but I keep hearing they're really for full frame cameras. Also the Sigma doesn't have os and the Nikon is a bit out of my budget :thinking:

Hmmm. That's an issue I suppose then.

I think people get a bit over excited about the 17-50 or 55 is an absolute must have for DX vs the 24-70. I have a D7000 and the 24-70 is perfect for me...I mainly use my camera for capturing images of my children...I don't get a chance to do much else as they are both very young! For what you want it for I think the 24-70 is definitely best....24 is plenty wide enough on DX for your needs and I think 50mm is a bit short....85mm on FX is supposed to be the ideal portrait length which 50mm on DX is a little bit short of.

You could try and find a 28-70 which is supposed to be fantastic but a bit of a lump!
