Best "holiday" lens for a Nikon D7100

Recent camera upgrade for my partner. Started with a D60 then D5100 and now a D7100. The lens she uses is a Nikon 18-200 version 1. The images I'm producing with my D7000 and various prime lenses are far better than those with the 18-200. Can't get her to change to primes. A friend (Zarch) says that the lens in question isn't really compatible with this camera. Okay for the D60 but not the D7100. So what's the best holiday lens for someone who is reluctant to change? Version 2 any better?
 
For the high res sensor of the 24mpx sensor in the D7100, the 18-140 is meant to be very good as it optimised for this sort of large pixel count sensor.
 
Depends on whether she favours the wide end or the telephoto but the trusty old 16-85mm seemed to work well on my D7100.

Best in what way? And what sort of holiday? What sort of subjects?
 
Consider just buying her the AF-S 35mm f/1.8G DX. I think she'll be blown away by the quality difference.

My wife has the D3300 with the kit 18-55mm zoom. She just got the AF-S 40mm f/2.8G DX Micro at my encouragement & it's not come off her camera. That includes a recent holiday to Scotland.
 
I had the 18-200 for a year and used it with my 7000.
Good range, and the quality is good, but not brilliant.
Recently bought a sigma 17-50 f2.8 and what a difference in detail and sharpness.

You might be searching for a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist.

Are there better lenses than the 18-200 in terms of optical quality? Yes, certainly.

If your partner already has the lens she wants, however, then doesn't she already have the best lens to suit her needs?

Yes, but she is becoming upset at the quality of the images I'm producing, Not the composition so much, but the clarity. Love is wonderful!

Oh, I see. I misread the original post. I didn't realise that she too was of the opinion that the images out of your camera were better.

Right, an honest question: you've definitely established that it's the equipment that's accounting for the differences between your images and not the person operating the equipment, right?

I'll second that, the 16-85mm is a good walk about lens and creates excellent images, I use one with my D7100.

Stephen, the flower is a lovely composition, but I'm not sure that it's in focus? If your partner likes taking that sort of shot, she really would love the Nikon 40mm micro.
