when it boils down to it for 400 quid there's a few to choose from
the 5d mk1 is a bargain for a full frame camera at the current going rates this time 18 months or so ago you couldn't buy one for less than 500 quid
18 months on the camera hasn't changed but the price has fallen significantly
the image quality as long as you don't try to push the ISO to much is very good even for todays standards but at 4 frames per second there not the fastest cameras but people who buy them have no concern about FPS
focusing is fine i hear a lot of negativity about the focusing on the early generation bodies but there's a hell of a lot of photos out there that are perfectly in focus
saying that if you want to track wildlife or fast cars at multi frames per second then the 5d mk1 is not for you anything else it's a good camera
thats full frame covered
when we get to APSC bodies there's a whole more to choose from like the 40d , 50d , even the 7d is now approaching your budget
out of those 3 i would choose the 7d even if it meant spending a few extra quid
the 40d and 50d have very little to choose from apart from the pixel count
i know there's more differences between them but when you have the photo's in front of you the only real difference is you can crop a 50d image a little tighter and maybe print a little larger
some will argue the 40d resolves more detail despite the 50d having 5 million more pixels to play with
iv'e owned all the cameras iv'e talked about here i had the 40d , 50d and 5dmk1 at the same time
the 5d and the other 2 bodies are different and have different uses
you need to think what you want to do with your photography and choose a body ( full frame or crop ) to suite
if you are planing wildlife or sports you will be very dissapointed with a 5d mk1 if your planing on portrait then it would be ideal
i said i would choose 7d out of the cameras i mentioned because it wouldn't really limit you on what you choose to do and for the price it is a better camera than the 40d / 50d in enough ways to warrant the price difference and important or not it is the only one that does video which might or might not come in handy
i still own a 40d, put a quality lens in front of it and it still produces great results the reason for letting go of the 5d mk1 is the purchase of the mk2
the 50d was sold a while ago i couldn't really warrant keeping both 40d and 50d there too much alike in actual use ( forget the specs )
it's your money and we all have our own ideas on how to spend it for you
