Best IQ & Faster alternative to 24-105 f4L

Having just purchased another Canon 40D (I missed my old one!!) I was looking to get the 24-105mm f4L as a semi permanent lens as I have had one on an old 40D before and it was rather nice! (17-40 or 10-22 for landscapes will come later) But was wondering what would be a good (read cheaper) alternative that would have great IQ and be faster than f/4. Any reccomenations welcome so I can look at image examples on Flickr.

Not much in it price wise unfortunately but the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 has great IQ and is obviously faster. It would also cover your 17-40 range.

Depends on what you shoot really - the 24-105 is great on full frame but can be a little narrow at the wide end on a crop body.
 
I Love 24mm on crop, it's my fave focal length. Most of my shooting is at the lower end so if I got the 17-55 f/2.8 that would save me also purchasing the 17-40 I guess. When I had the Tammy 17-50 I did find I needed a little more sometimes but most of the time it arround 24mm. There is a 17-55 f2.8 for sale on here but it already has a spec of dust in it after less than 4 months! I have heard they are nicknamed 'The hoover'!! Plus I have read they burn out their AF motors. Still a very nice lens though.

Putting 'faster' to one side, how about the 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS?

We have about a dozen of these. They are prone to dust, but mainly behind the front element where (a) it doesn't affect your pictures and (b) it's easy to clean out. I don't think we've had a single AF failure on them, so wherever you read that, I'd take it with a pinch of salt.
 
Could always look into a Tamron 24-70 f2.8? Gives you the 24 and a little bit longer past 50 and I've heard it's similar to the 17-50. I've not tried one though.
 
You're asking for a lens with better IQ and a larger max aperture, but cheaper?

I think it works the other way around :lol:

I'll have a look at that Tamron!! I do like the look of the 15-85 though. IQ looks superb!

Edit: There's no 24-70 f2.8, only a 28-75 f2.8 or 24-135 f3.5-5.6.:(

i sold my 15-85 very good lens with good build quality, sold purely because i want a faster lens hence my decision is between the 24-70 and the 17-55.
 
I think for me the 24-70 f2.8L is going to be too heavy as may be the 17-55 f2.8 as well. I have had a 24-105 before and that was heavy enough! The 15-85 is a little lighter than the 24-105.
 
If anything, I'd say the 17-55 (which I hired) is lighter than the 24-105 (which I own), but not having had them side by side, that is a bit subjective. I certainly didn't consider the 17-55 heavy at all.

Yes it is, but not by very much at all. 645g versus 670g. In practice you'd hardly notice any difference.
 
Not quite as wide, but the Tamron 28-75 2.8 is extremely sharp, even wide open - and very good value. The AF can be a bit more hit and miss in low light though.
 
I would really like just one lens and i think 28mm isn't going to be wide enough really. If i bought the Tamron 28-75 i would then have to buy either the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 or the Canon 17-40 f4L,

mind you both the Tammy's would be kinda cool. :D
