What gives the best IQ from the below lens with added tc-

Nikon 400mm f2.8 AFS II with 1.4tc
Nikon 400mm f2.8 AFS II with 1.7tc
Nikon 500mm f4 AFS II with 1.4tc

Im looking into buying a longer lens and wondered if the 1.7tc would be ok on the 400 f2.8 as it get a similar distance to the 500 with a 1.4tc.

Your thoughts would be appreciated and would help me research before taking the plundge and putting out the large expense.Cheers..

Should have added the lens is for wildlife and birding.

Not used a 400 and have an older 500 so can't comment on those specific lenses.

The 500 is the cheaper of the two lenses and could be used with a 1.7 or even the 2.0 if need be. If you're using it for wildlife/ birding you'll likely be looking for all the length you can get. Even with a 500, a small bird is still a small bird :)

One would expect IQ with the 1.4 to be better than with the 1.7, and in turn better than with the 2.0.

You've already got 300-400 covered with the Sigma zoom and Nikon prime so I'd go with the 500.

come into some cash mark?

what ACS says shorter the TC the less impact on IQ it has. I'd go for the 500 f4 VR over the 400 f2.8. cheaper, lighter and longer. although you'd get more reach with the 400 with 2x than you would with the 500 f1.4 and still have AF on your D300

Thanks for the replies.I knew the 1.4tc would give better IQ than the 1.7.I think my real question is does the 400 f2.8 with a 1.7tc give better IQ than the 500 f4 with a 1.4tc. Any other reasons to pic the 500 over the 400?

Never thought about adding the 1.7tc to the 500 f4---anyone any pics showing IQ.

I am leaning towards the 500 due to weight and when neeeded i could handhold for short periods
