Best lens for D40x?

I've bought myself a Nikon D40x body. I'm a complete newbie at this photography lark so would like some advice as to what the best lens to buy is? It will be for general point and shoot stuff, nothing too fancy. Not planning on photographing anything in particular.

Ideally I'd like to spend less than £100 on it too.

Try to get hold of the kit lens 18-55mm , should cover all your needs.

Should be able to pick up a VR model of the 18-55 for under £80ish. The Nikon 35mm f/1.8 is also a cracker (has built in motor) but is about £60 out of your price range. Been the best thing to help me with my photography, being a prime you need to move around and look at what your photoraphing instead of just standing in one spot and zooming in and out.

its not VR but that shouldn't be a factor a 18-55mm

My girlfriend is buying me the lens as a late xmas present. She said she will only buy me a new one. I'm not complaining

why dont you get a gold old 50mm f1.8

Considering what I already have, I'd get 50mm f/1.4 AF-S (f/1.8 won't focus on D40X!) and maybe 30mm.
