Best lens

I'm very happy using the Canon 15-85mm on a crop body. I use it now on a 7D and have used it in the past on a 50D with good results on both.
It's very well made and actually feels like a lens not like a piece of plastic. Good reviews to be found all over the web.

It all depends on your budget really, I used a 24-105 f4 L on my 7D regularly as a walk around lens when visiting any attractions, it's got great IQ, great range, constant aperture and it doesn't get too heavy, but it is the best part of £700 new.
The 15-85 is also a great lens, although I've not owned one I've borrowed one a few times, and it gives very good IQ but is also a bit on the pricey side normally around £450-500 new.
The EF-S 17-85 IS or the EF-S 18-135 IS are both decent lenses giving decent IQ with a good range and both have IS. They are both around £270-300 new, but both have a DC motor for AF so will be a bit noisier than the others.
I'm sure others will be along with their suggestions, but personally I'd go with the 24-105 f4 IS L as it's a great performer.

Have also heard very good things about the 15-85, seems to be a suitable range too for what you need.
