Best lenses for a beginner buying Canon EOS 50D as first SLR

look at another thread on here, mulitple people owned the VC version and ended up selling it and getting the non vc version as it has better IQ.. ;)

Erm, that means I'm back to square one I think, which means the non-vc version or the Sigma that does have IS but doesn't do f2.8 all the way through, OR spend a fortune on the Canon version which has it all.

I wasn't expecting this to be so complicated :)
 
Get the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 OS

I don't think that will be wide enough with my 1.6 sensor.

Sometimes it's best to get 2 lenses to cover the range you want rather than asking one to do it all. It may be worthwhile to start with a 24-70 or the like and then see where limitations are while saving for a 10-22 or whatever you find you need.
A 24-70 lives on my 40d and I only occasionally wish for something wider.
