Best Macro lens for Sony a290

Hi all,

As above really! I am currently borrowing my Dads Sony A290 until I get a cam of my own, and I am looking for a macro lens for it.

Its my Dad's birthday soon, so I would like to get it for him as a thank you/ birthday present.

So, to that end, what macro lens do people think is best, and where is the best place to get it from?

"best" could get very expensive. For "best value" I'd suggest a Tamron 90/2.8.

The three most common are the Sigma 105, Tamron 90 and Sony / Minolta 100 (all f/2.8)

These all offer a reasonable working distance, very good IQ and relatively reasonable price. The Sigma and Tamron are generally cheaper than the Sony, there's not a lot between them in terms of IQ, etc.

If you won't be trying macros of insects, then you can opt for a 50mm or even 30mm macro, but be aware they will require you to get much closer to the subject.

If you have the cash, the Tamron 180 f/3.5 macro is excellent for longer reach - so less chance of scaring away insects, etc.
