Heyllo all - i am really looking for a new macro for my Nikon but am just as interested in what people make of the other brands of Macro lenses

:)

If you can afford it get the Sigma 150 2.8. A great lens and not just for macro work. It is my favourite lens.

From everything I have seen it's pretty hard to go wrong with a macro lens... I personally had a tamron 90mm 2.8 lens which was unbelievably sharp. I only really sold it as I wasn't really using it and found the f1.8 on the 85mm more use to me.

As above, there is no such thing as a 'bad' macro lens....the optics are generally very sharp indeed. What you need to work out is the kind of things you will be taking pictures of and the working distance you'll need. AF isn't essential in the lens if you are solely taking macro shots (you will use MF).

I own both the Tamron 90mm and Sigma 150mm lenses and they are both excellent performers.

the Tammy 180mm is great but I wish that it had a focus limit switch ...
Still mostly you'll end up using MF anyway.

105 VR ? Had mine up for sale a while back as i just dont use it that much, but thats another thread :D

I have the Sigma 150 2.8 and a Nikon 60mm AFD. They are both excellent lens. Also if you get a 1.4 converter for the sigma it becomes a very good 210mm f4.

Mick.

I've got a 180mm Tamron on the way - they seem pretty rare SH but get great reviews...

+1 for the Tamron 180mm, i got a mint one from here a few months ago and love it. As mentioned a focus limiter would be nice but manual is easier anyway.

Mostly i will be taking pictures of flowers

just want a decent alround macro lens to get me started

am saving up for it so will have a budget of around 800 though this can be extended if something truely wonderful comes along :)

The 105 is great for flowers etc, and portraits.

would be great to have it double as a portrait lens

thanks for the link mark they were some beautiful pictures :)

I have got a 105vr. If you want a play let me know and when I am around we can meet up. Salisbury is not far from me.

105 vr doubles as a great portrait lens as well, especially on FF:thumbs::thumbs: or Nikon 200mm macro. Nikon glass is the way to go.

If cash is a bit tight you can't go far wrong with a sigma 105 f/2.8 macro. Cracking lens and nice and sharp
