Best Memory Card for Motor Sport Photography

I got the official nikon card from jessops 4gb £19 works superb for me

The older one is class 6 and the newer one is class 10. They are both 30mbs so i am not sure how this affects the write speeds to the card.
Prehaps sombody could enlighten.

He's right to be confused! SD Cards are awfully marketed to be fair. On both of them they say "30 MB/s", so they should perform at the same speed? Unfortunately not..

Now even I haven't got a firm grasp of things, but from what I've learned.. always go by the class rating, ignore the fancy "30 MB/s" on the front of the card. You can't go wrong with the class rating as that directly refers to the minimum speed at which the card will read and write, this is an industry standard rating.

I don't have the figures off the top of my head, but I do know that Class 10 is significantly faster than Class 6. ;)

Anyway, back on topic.. I'm not sure how many images the D90 can hold in the buffer until it's full, but if it's quite a few and you're not going to be shooting like a machine gun then you will get away with using any Class 6 card. The SanDisk Extreme III range is very good, although it's been a while since I last bought some SD cards so I'm not sure if they're still using that range? Class 10 cards aren't too expensive either so it may well be worth getting them instead. Basically just buy the fastest you can that your budget will allow, that has always worked well for me.

The type of card you get really depends on your camera. Your camera will be limited to a certain buffer size and writing speed to the card, so there's no point buying a fast card if you camera won't write to that card at the same speed. The only benefit you would see is the time it would take to transfer to your computer. Have a look at the SanDisk Product Compatibility tool to see which cards are suitable for your camera.

I've got a Canon 1D MKii and there no point me buying the latest cards, as the Extreme III are the fastest cards that the the camera handle transfer wise. Buying any thing faster is just wasting money.
