Best nikon DSLR for around £500?

I'd like to get everyone's opinion on this, a guy who's worked for me as an assistant and who is really keen to step up a level has asked my advice on the best camera to buy. His wife has £500 to spend and wants to get something that will give him the most control and stand him in good stead for the next couple of years. Now it's a while since I bought a camera at that price point so am looking for advice myself!
I shoot on Nikon and he has a couple of Nikon lenses so wants to stay with family, is he best to get a something like a new D90 or D5100 or would you rather go down the second hand route and try and get a D2x for the same money?

I've got a D2X at the moment. It's superb but if anything above ISO 400 is involved I'd rule it out as modern sensors spank it in that regard. At ISO 100, it is lovely.

I've also had a D300 in the past. That leaps out as being the obvious choice here. Same sensor as the D90 but far better build and external controls.
 
Well if you want 2nd hand and there's nothing wrong with that, take a look at MPB Photographic.

I have just ordered a Nikon D300 from them and should be here tomorrow morning, so it will get a good work out at Whipsnade Zoo on Saturday. :thumbs:
 
What does he like to shoot?

For the £500 his best bet is the D300. Still a good camera and unless he is really into low light work the ISO on the D300 should be fine. I have used mine at 3200 and printed the results after a little noise reduction software.

Nice sturdy body, good sealing and a cracking AF system.
 
I did not realise you could get a d300 for under £500 - I think that's going to be the way I'll tell him to go - probably the best of the dx's for that money. Thanks for all your advice!
